Black women, come in the room—don’t be shy. Close the door behind you. Let’s talk, sis.
Are you suffering in silence, feeling like you always have to be strong? Do you feel like you can’t be vulnerable and admit that you’re not okay because everyone depends on you—but there’s no one for you to call on? Have you been working overtime to take care of work, your kids, your family, but neglecting yourself in the process?
If this sounds like you, you may be suffering from Superwoman Syndrome.
What Is Superwoman Syndrome?
Superwoman Syndrome, also known as Superwoman Schema, is the constant pressure to achieve perfection in every area of your life. It’s the weight of being everything for everyone—except yourself. And now, you’re feeling overwhelmed and highly stressed. You’ve been neglecting yourself, and it’s showing up as chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and even headaches.
Sis, it’s time to take the cape off.
You don’t have to do it all. You don’t have to carry every burden. And you don’t have to suffer alone. Here are some ways to start taking back your life and prioritizing YOU:
5 Tips to Overcome Superwoman Syndrome
1. Seek Support
You can’t keep bottling everything inside until you explode. It’s time to release what you’ve been holding onto. Find a trusted friend, therapist, or coach (like myself!) who can help you navigate through your struggles. You deserve a safe space to be heard and supported.
2. Set Boundaries
Learn to say no without guilt. You don’t have to pick up every load or fix every problem. My dad used to tell me, “A lack of preparation on your part is not an emergency on my part.” I hated it then, but now I live by it. Protect your peace and stop stretching yourself thin for everyone else.
3. Prioritize Daily Self-Care
Self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. And it’s not just about spa days; it’s about daily moments of peace. Take at least 5-10 minutes a day to shut everything off and do something that refreshes you. Whether it’s deep breathing, listening to music, journaling, or just sitting in silence—make yourself a priority.
4. Be Realistic About Your Limits
You cannot fly the plane and serve drinks and cookies to the passenger at the same time. Be real about how much you can handle. Prioritize the most important tasks and save the rest for later. You’re not a machine—you don’t have to do everything at once.
5. Stop Trying to Be Perfect
Perfection is a losing battle, sis. You will never be able to do it all perfectly, and that’s okay! The world will not end if you don’t get everything done. Give yourself grace and take the pressure off.
